Mother's Day celebration started in Rome and became a United States national holiday less than 100 years ago.
You may think it was all started by Hallmark in an effort to sell cards, but that's not the case at all. Mother's Day dates back to the ancient Romans and made its way to the United States in the early 1900's and finally became a national holiday in 1914.

The earliest tributes to Mother's Day date back to the annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to Rhea, the mother of many deities, and to the offerings ancient Romans made to their Great Mother of Gods, Cybele. Christians celebrated a Mother's Day of sorts during a festival on the fourth Sunday in Lent in honor of Mary, mother of Christ. In England the holiday was expanded to include all mothers. It was then called Mothering Sunday.

In the United States it started with one woman named Anna Jarvis. Jarvis was an Appalachian homemaker and she organized a day to raise awareness of poor health conditions of her community. She thought the day would be best advocated by mothers and called the day "Mother's Work Day".

This holiday is very important in Ukraine and has always been widely celebrated too. 13th Jan is the same as Dec 31st in the "old" dates (without the day shift) - so this is why this is called Old New Year.

There are a lot of holidays in the Ukraine, all of which are important to the Ukrainians. However, there is one day that symbolizes the independence of Ukraine.

After facing two World Wars and later lots of political turmoil, Ukraine got their independence from the Soviet Unions on the 24th of August, 1991. The Independence Day of Ukraine was a hard fought battle with the constitution being adopted nearly five years after its independence.

On this special day, adults don't go to their jobs, and children don't attend school. There are many social activities prepared by the Municipal. During the day, people go to the free markets where they can buy everything they need. It could be a bouquet of flowers, a bottle of champagne, or a fluffy toy.

Children can enjoy a big circus or different park amusements. However, the best part of the day is the fireworks in the evening. Most of Ukrainian people enjoy that show.

Tatyana's Day is a pleasant and upbeat holiday highlighting the best, brightest, and most carefree years in the life of every student. On this day, all former classmates tend to grow nostalgic, and recall their fellow students, Deans and Principals as well as recalling memorable student years. The holiday's origin goes far back into history.

It's the day Moscow State University was founded in the XVIII century and St. Tatyana - a Christian martyr - was declared the patron saint of all scholars.

Every year on January 25 Russian and Ukrainian students celebrate St. Tatyana's day. She’s the patron saint of all students and in Russia and the Ukraine her name day marks the end of winter exams.

Nowadays, on this winter day we congratulate students of all generations. With feelings of gratitude we recollect the teachers who opened the Temple of Sciences for us.
